Madrid Capital City of Spain
Madrid has been the capital city of Spain since the sixteenth century and therefore doubles as the seat of the government. The origin of the city can be traced as far back as the ninth century when the city was established by the Moorish civilisation. Madrid has since then progressively grown into a modern-day city but has still managed to keep hold of almost all medieval structures making it a diversified metropolis when all is narrowed down to architectural heritage.
In the recent past, the Spain capital has seen an increasing number of tourists knocking at its doors and consequently, Madrid has been ranked amongst the top tourist destinations in Europe and the world as a whole. There are scores of attractions that have turned Madrid into a melting pot that it is today amongst vacationers. Some of them include the ancient village conserved in the area of the la Paja plaza.
Close to the section christened the ‘Madrid of the Austrian’ in the Puerto Del Sol, the medieval metropolis was put up during the Golden epoch. It is in the region of Puerto Del Sol that you will find the Plaza Mayor, one that is well thought-out to be among the premium spots throughout Spain. On the other hand, the Plaza de la Villa hosts the striking City Hall edifice which was built during the seventeenth century. The imperial castle is bounded by lush vegetative precincts that are within the reach of the public where you can take some time off to relax.
The city of Madrid takes pride in high valued treasures archived from the early years of the nineteenth century. The varied types of artefacts can be found in parks, gardens, museums and art galleries. Some of them include the Madrid Archaeological Museum, Buen Retiro, El Carson del as well as the Prado Museum. Others such as the Reina Sofia Art Centre showcase the diversity in art exhibited by the Spaniards.
In the region of the Guadarrama Mountains is the San Lorenzo de El Escorial. It is here that the elegant palace cum monastery was set up by King Phillip II. The monastery is perhaps the most distinguished architectural masterpiece done by the renowned Juan de Herrera, a great Spanish architect. A rural hamlet named Aranjuez came to life to cater for the needs of the impressive stately vacation abode that is in the present day bordered by an outstanding recreational area on the verge of river Tagus.
