Popular festivals in Spain
Spanish festivals are part of the identity that the country is known for and they have capitalized on this by having festivals throughout the year both as national festivals and those that have been introduced by the other autonomous communities within Spain. The festivals have a variety of meanings and involve different activities as way of ensuring that the people who attend the festivities enjoy themselves and have the enthusiasm to attend the next year. Spanish festivals happen throughout the year which makes it easier for tourists to be able to attend at least one when they are taking a vacation in Spain.
In the first half of the year, there are couple of festivals that take place in Spain such as the drum festival whereby a group of drummers who walk through the city beating their drums, which normally produces a deafening sound. This festival takes place on the first day of the year.
The festival known as disguised devils takes place in February in which people disguise themselves as devils and run through the streets while dancing. The cowbells that the participants tie on their waists should not be interrupted as the procession is taking place. In March, there is a nighttime parade that involves the lighting of bonfires which takes place during spring.
In April there are two festivals known as the April fair and the festival of the moors as well as the Christians. The April fair takes place during the whole day with highlight being during the lunch hour as well as the night time when the festivals are at their climax. The Easter weekend usually begins in the last week of April which is also marked by a festival.
In the second half of the year, there is a local fiesta that marks St. Augustine’s day in the month of August in the Balearic Islands. This festival usually lasts at least one week with many activities lined up for the attendees to enjoy. The famous tomato festival takes place in Valencia whereby the attendees throw approximately two hundred and forty pounds of tomatoes at each other to mark the festival. This festival usually takes place in August.
Lastly, there are festivals that take place in September as well as October namely the fiesta de verano, a wine festival among others. These festivals give tourists the opportunity to enjoy the culture of the Spanish culture in its entirety.
