Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia as well as its most populated city. It is considered to be the 2nd biggest city in the entire Spain next to Madrid. Barcelona is situated along the northern coast of Spain, on the Mediterranean Sea. It is considered to be the most modern city and most influential to the economy of Spain.

The city may be very modern but it has still preserved its rich history as is evidently shown in the historical monuments and architectural structures found all over Barcelona. Some of these monuments and structures have been around since the Gothic, Renaissance and even further back than these periods. Barcelona is also known for its Modern architecture especially that of the works of Antonio Gaudi.

One of the famous tourist destinations in Barcelona is the Las Ramblas which is a 2-kilometer boulevard that courses along the port and the Plaza de Catalunya. Here you will see lots of cafeterias, vendors, street performers, art galleries and theatres. There are also interesting architectural structures such as the Academia de Sciencias or the Academy of Science with its famous giant watch that was built in 1868. Also on the boulevard is the Palacio de Moya which is the popular venue for expositions in the city. Another place to visit on the boulevard is the Palacio de la Virreina which holds the seat for the department of culture in the regional government. For tourists who wish to see the center of the artist community then they should head to the magnificent square called the Placa Reial where they can also see lots of beautiful fountains, luxury shops, arcades, pubs, bars and cafes.

The Barro Gotico in Spain is the Gothic Quarter of the city. It is also considered to be the oldest as well as most exciting spot in Barcelona. Here you can find the remains of the original fort as well as the Palacio del Ayuntamiento or the town hall and the Palacio de la Generalitat. At the peak of the Taber mountain is the ancient millstone called the Calle Paradis where the Iberian tribes have settled way before the beginning of the Roman period.

After touring the historic sites of Barcelona, you can head to the more modern parts of the city particularly the El Ensanche which is considered to be the most modern part of Barcelona. This specific area was built from 1970 to 1936 by the famous architect Cerda. The plan of the architect was to create a luxury capital for the bourgeoisie and to increase the size of Barcelona by as much as 5 times its area. Here you can also find magnificent monuments created by Gaudi such as the Sagrada Familia cathedral, the Palacio Guell and the Park Guell.

The Montjuic is a mountain in Barcelona that was the location of a memorable event in 1929, the World Exposition. It was also the same venue that was used for the Olympic Games in 1992. Located at the peak of the Montjuic Mountain is a fortress that was originally built in the 17th century.
